Just For Starters

Think about these two questions.

  1. Do you have any belief in God?
  2. What past influences have shaped your current beliefs?

What's in the Bible?
The Bible is broadly spilt into 2 sections - The Old Testament and the New Testament.

Old Testament
Begins with God creating the universe in 6 days. Adam and Eve are in the Garden of Eden. When tempted however, they give in to the temptation and disobey God. This corrupts the perfect creation and mankind becomes sinful by nature.

God chooses a man and through him and his descendants, creates a nation of people who will be his special people and will provide a Saviour for the earth. The history of this nation is one of continued rebellion and disobedience against God, who faithfully forgives them when they turn back to him.

Throughout the Old Testament there are many events and people that symbolise and talk of the one who is to come and provide a way that the earth may be saved.

New Testament
The first four books are the four gospels - biographies of Jesus, written by people who were eyewitnesses to the events that took place. These books compliment each other telling in different ways of his teaching, miracles, his death, resurrection and accession.

The rest (except the last book) is a history of the early church. After Jesus went back to heaven, his followers told many people about what they had seen and about what God had done. Christianity spread very quickly as the power of God brought people back to him. The power of God is also seen demonstrated through the miracles done by his followers. There are also letters written to churches to encourage and teach the new converts to Christianity.

The last book of the Bible, Revelation, is about the end times. In a vision, God reveals to a man, what these end times will be like. This is a very hard book to understand and many have had different views on what these things mean, but are agreed that it is a loving God who doesn’t even keep these things hidden from us.
